Hack #11: The decision that quietly costs families thousands

I've been thinking about something lately.

Every summer, parents ask me the same question.

"What colleges should we start looking at?"

I understand why.

It feels like the obvious place to begin.

But after spending more than two decades working with students and families, I've come to believe it's actually the second question.

The first question is much more important.

What kind of life are we helping our students build?

Not...

"What college?"

Not...

"What major?"

What life?

Because once you know where you're trying to go, the college list starts looking very different.

One family wants their daughter to graduate debt-free.

Another wants their son close enough to come home on weekends.

One student dreams about working for NASA.

Another lights up every time they volunteer with children.

Someone else wants to own a business before they're thirty.

Those are different futures.

And different futures deserve different college lists.

One of the biggest myths in college planning is that there's one "best" school.

I don't believe that.

I think there are schools that fit.

And schools that don't.

The goal isn't getting into the most impressive college.

The goal is finding the place where your student's gifts have the best chance to grow.

Here's the interesting part.

When families start there...

They usually spend less.

Because they're making intentional decisions instead of emotional ones.

They apply to colleges that actually fit.

They avoid schools that were never financially realistic.

They discover opportunities they would have missed.

And they waste a lot less time—and money—along the way.

That's why I consider this a College Cost Hack.

Not because it saves money immediately.

Because it prevents expensive mistakes later.
